About

From March 8th through March 11th, 2011, Florida Atlantic University, in cooperation with Queensland University of Technology will host the 3rd biennial SUBTROPICAL CITIES conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.   This international conference will bring together experts in the fields of architecture and urban planning for an exchange of ideas on SUBTROPICAL URBANISM: BEYOND CLIMATE CHANGE.  The Florida Atlantic University College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs in partnership with the Queensland University of Technology Centre for Subtropical Design have worked tirelessly to bring this Conference to Fort Lauderdale.  We invite you to join in this discussion on our blog site.

This gathering of international educators, researchers and practitioners will convene in the “Venice of America” through this unique collaboration.  The Conference will address the following cross-cutting and interdisciplinary themes:

  • The future of subtropical cities in the urban age. As world population continues to shift predominantly to urban settlements the effects of climate change and social and economic transformations will be dramatic. Social and spatial pressures on subtropical cities will increase as migration towards urban areas in this climate zone present new challenges to maintain and improve quality of life, design, and the architecture of decision making for resilient cities.
  • In the post-Copenhagen/post GFC will market driven approaches to urban and regional planning remain relevant? What alternative approaches will ensure livability and economic resilience in subtropical cities?
  • Adaptation to climate change, mitigation of its effects, and planning for massive change due to inundation and increasing storm activity in coastal communities demands a multi-disciplinary approach to design. Where are the vulnerabilities and what are the effects?
